The Third Revolution

New Voice
Unlike the other two fashion revolutions there was no massive war necessary to start a revolution in fashion. Pre-hip-hop there was a social war between races in the United States. An entire race and section of the world was now being heard out of the streets of New York because of this new genre of music. Hip-hop became a phenomena and new lifestyle. Ideas of hip-hop spread through music, movies, television, advertising, dancing, slang, attitude, and fashion

Hip-hop Revolution
Hip-hop has changed who we look to for fashion. Some of the major icons in the fashion industry are hip-hop artists, and some of those artists have started their own fashion lines. Hip-hop fashion is created by us and what we wear.
Also fashion used to be from concept to consumer, which means first there is a concept made by the designer and then the consumer buys it and wears it. Hip-hop has reversed it to consumer to concept. We take the best pieces of different designers and wear it our own way. The consumer decides what to wear and the concept or ideas come from designers come later based on what we buy.

Fashion World War (II)

Lil History Lesson
Germany invaded Paris in June of 1940. Beloved fashion capitol of the world was in war-torn, bombed ruins left to rebuild. The United States and U.S.S.R. became the new world powers.

What about the Fashion??
Because during the war there was limited communication with France (and if there was it wasn't about fashion) and after the war there was not much France to communicate with, our fashion influence changed. Instead of looking to Paris, countries looked domestically. The war ended in 1945 but the U.S. made their own mini fashion capitol New York City.

The New "Dior" Look of 1947
Despite the war, fashion proves it can bring us into a new era! France thought their fashion reign was over until March 15, 1947. According to vogue.com new designer Christian Dior gave his first show presenting his New Look with a mission  "to make women extravagantly, romantically, eyelash-battingly female". Some say Dior single handedly dragged French couture out of the dark ages of WWII and into a new magnificent fashion revolution.

What was the New Look??
It was a new softer look with rounded shoulders, a cinched waist, and often skirt or dress length just below the knee.

Vive la Revolution

Before: large full skirts, tight waist, low cut tops, and all made of fine fabrics like silk, velvet, and laces much like pre-pirate Keira Knightley in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" (1660-1689 era dress)

After: Simpler dresses, affordable fabrics like cotton and linens after 1789-1799. The reduction of the use of fancy fabric and more elaborate dresses made it harder to distinguish between the classes (much like the purpose of the French Revolution)
